House, M.D. - Greg House/Brittany House - seven virtues: temperance

Well, it's another set down. These last two themes have been difficult for me, since they're qualities the Houses don't really have, but other than that, it's been a pretty good showing. I hope you enjoyed.

Title: Elaborate Lives (1/2)
Fandom: House, M.D.
Pairing: Greg House/Brittany House
Prompt: #7 -- Temperance
Word Count: 305
Rating: PG
Summary: There are pieces of her he'll never see...

Brittany House is many different things to many different people. She knows the image that is expected of her, and she'll do anything to keep it up. She'll lie and crawl and work herself to death, just to keep on being the beloved good girl that she's always been.

Which means she internalizes everything. And that's never good. Over the years, there's been a dark place inside her, where all the anger and the hurt and the frustration goes, where it stays until she absolutely can't take it anymore. And when she needs to explode, she has someone to run to. It used to be Jimmy McCarron, who worked with her on handling her emotions, but these days it's her worst enemy. Jake Hannigan. Jake doesn't understand the role that he plays, he just likes pushing her, especially when she shoves back.

Brittany and Jake go at each other's throats, time and time again. Whether it's a violent game of pickup basketball or a useless argument just for the sake of threatening each other's lives, they're violent and they're cruel and they're horrible to one another. But that's the way that they are. The way that they deal with the constant tension between them. The way the emotions come out.

He knows not to leave cuts or bruises anywhere they can be seen. So finally, when Brittany's done beating and being beaten, when she's calm enough to be the woman she wants to be, she can come home to her husband in one normal piece. She can hug him and kiss him and ask him how his day was, and everything looks normal. Not one hair is out of place. Her smile is still the same.

She's got a demon in her, but she's got it well trained, and no one is ever the wiser.

Summary: ...and pieces of her he'll be the only one to see.

Greg House is a very smart man. Smarter than his wife, that's for sure. He knows the balancing act that she goes through, every day, even if she won't admit it. She wants to be taken seriously, and so she does whatever it takes to earn that respect. She believes in things like professionalism, formality, doing things by the book (most of the time). When it matters, when it's on the line, she's the best dressed, most well-mannered, 'yes, sir, no, sir' kind of person you could ask for. He blames her military blood.

He's seen her at work. The very picture of perfection. Her hair put up, in some Donna Karan suit that she's had for years, looking beautiful. She's calm, collected, and in control, able to ask for and get what she wants while still being polite and with a smile. Nothing distracts her from the task at hand or from the people who helped her get there. When it's business, she is nothing but.

But House also knows better. He knows that once he gets her away from the job and behind closed doors, at the end of the day, he can unravel her restraint and her perfect image with just one look, or just one kiss. He has her wrapped around his finger.

She loves him, and he loves her, and that will never change. She's a pushover when it comes to showing affection. All he has to do is pout or look at her the right way or speak to her in just the right tone of voice. Then image and professionalism is all too soon forgotten, and he's having his way with her, or she's handcuffing him to the bed, and they're lost in the heat of the moment, focused on nothing but each other. The passion and the fire she holds in is all for him, and he knows it by the way she cries out his name.

It makes him infinitely proud, loved, and it also makes him smirk. Because he knows that she is his, and his alone. Even if she blushes in public and has to hide the marks he's left on her neck by wearing a turtleneck the next day.
