It hurt more than it should or he would ever admit.
Echizen got to return all those serves, and Tezuka was looking at him so intently, and trying to draw the best out of him. It was only a warm up game, but it looked like a serious match.
Tezuka was so beautiful and so passionate, and it was Echizen who got his whole concentration.
He would like to think that it was completely unfair, because it felt so, but it wasn’t, really. Neither did he own Tezuka, nor was it his privilege to play serious matches with Tezuka.
Besides, he could only blame himself (alongside with Tezuka’s arm) for not having seen Tezuka on the other side of the net, and for not having felt for such a long time that gaze challenging him and telling him to give his best, because less wouldn’t be enough.
But actually, the gaze... Perhaps situation wasn’t nearly that bad.
True. Echizen had Tezuka’s undivided attention.
True. The direct consequence was that he didn’t have it and that he needed to share Tezuka with someone, but it wouldn’t be so bad, perhaps.
The way Tezuka looked at Echizen could be challenging, proud, and fatherly or brotherly, sometimes even friendly, but never anything else.
The way Tezuka looked at him was never fatherly or brotherly. Even when the eyes were soft, they were soft in a different way. There was the small smile, which was visible only if one knew exactly what to look for, and often there was the slight challenge in that smile that could be considered flirty.
He could share Tezuka in tennis, but never in anything else.
However, it would be best to consider playing seriously in order to guarantee that there would be absolutely nothing that could rival him.
