The other was different from those the boy lived among. Like the boy himself, with hairless face and belly. He didn't know if the other was more different or more alike, for the other always kept himself covered and the boy had never been able to see his tail.
That afternoon, as the other slept, the boy dared.
He'd thought the other's hair was wintergrass, but closer now he saw it was late sunlight.
Then the other looked at him: looked at him with summergrass eyes -
He was back beneath the surface before he remembered, still unseen, the tail.
