[part 1 | part 2 | part 3 | part 4]
Draco stared at the resignation letter addressed to McGonagall, frowning. There was no light in his father's study save for a thick red candle that burned on the opposite side of the large cherry-wood desk. He set the letter down next to a stack of job advert clippings. Beside these lay a jumbled heap of letters, all addressed to Mr Draco Malfoy, all saying the same thing.
We regret to inform you that the position you inquired about has been filled. Thank you for your interest.
Draco snorted. There weren't that many wizards looking for jobs in this country; he was simply persona non grata. His name slammed doors in his face faster than his Azkaban record. He shut his eyes, forcing himself to think. He could not resign from Hogwarts until he secured other employment, but that was easier said than done, as he'd discovered in the past month.
Was he being daft? Should he just go back in September? Surely there could be a way for him to avoid Potter. He could request that his classroom be moved to the opposite side of the castle. Merlin knew there were enough disused classrooms to accommodate this. He could--
A sharp knocking startled Draco and he looked up to see a large snowy owl blinking at him from the other side of the window. It stuck out its leg, allowing Draco to untie the parchment tied there.
No signature. An untidy, boyish scrawl Draco would not know but for the message.
I can't stop thinking about you.
There was a lump in Draco's throat that hadn't been there a moment ago. The owl remained on the windowsill, gazing at him with its large yellow eyes. It clicked its beak impatiently after a few moments, obviously expecting a reply. What was he supposed to say to that? I can't stop thinking about you either? I've been trying to find a way to get away from you so I can stop?
Three hours later, Draco sat and stared at his response. The desk in front of him was now littered with the crumpled remains of earlier attempts. Potter's owl was perched on his shoulder; she'd been nipping his ear at regular intervals and if he didn't give her something soon, her claws would break right through his robes.
"Here you go," he muttered, and the owl stuck her leg out. If Draco didn't know any better, he would have said she appeared amused.
He watched the owl fly away until she was nothing but a dull speck above the dense, dark woods around the Manor. He'd thought about what to write for so long that the words seemed carved into his brain, like "I must not tell lies" was etched into the skin on the back of Potter's right hand.
Tea. September first, after the Welcoming Feast. Don't be late.
It was one step and Draco was sure it would be forward.
Everything else was bound to fall into place eventually.

My favorite parts:
If Draco didn't know any better, he would have said she appeared amused.
Because I like Hedwig love.
the words seemed carved into his brain, like "I must not tell lies" was etched into the skin on the back of Potter's right hand.
Because reminders of canon backstory make fan fiction that much more powerful. This, for example, reminds the reader of everything from Umbitch's arrival at Hogwarts on, in 17 words. Cheers.

That ending was as satisfying as a big ol' slab of moist chocolate cake with chocolate icing and chocolate shavings.

I loved the titles, they work together very good. And the repetitive use of "tea" - tea is great! :-)
Here some thoughts on the single pieces...
1. Draco is so inwardly broken, although he tries to keep up appearances. Which is difficult, with his beauty and everything else gone. My favourite sentence:
Heroes weren't allowed to know that their enemies didn't always wear black.
2. Draco's motives for helping Ginny - so very much in character. This was lovely. It's obvious that Harry would not understand them. My favourite sentence:
"If you don't, the magic won't work for you," said Draco, an unbidden smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "The reasons are irrelevant."
3. On the light side, too, not everybody seems to wear black. My favourite sentence:
Draco suddenly remembered the whispered words of a dying Potions master. "...no love lost between Potter and the Ministry..."
4. Draco shoved the essay aside and hid his face in his hands. I love the image. It's not only Draco hiding his face, but his feelings and his hopes and despair and just everything - from himself as well as from Harry. I simply want to hug him here - although I guess he would snarl at me for trying. ;-)
5. If the saying has ever been true, that animals and their masters resemble each other, it is for Hedwig and Harry. :-) Oh, and I just love the small canon reverence about Harry's encounter with Umbridge. My favourite sentence:
It was one step and Draco was sure it would be forward.
I love the hope it brings.
Thank you for sharing!

Oooh, yeah! That just melted my icy heart, right there. I love how you built this around a one-night stand rather than an ongoing relationship thing. Very powerful emotions coming out. And I don't read Draco-POV fic nearly enough, so this was a nice change for me. :)

I die a little when I think of some of the crap I was reading instead. There were odd little things in this that got my attention: Harry leaving Hagrid's hut as is; Draco's scar (poor guy, you're still disfiguring him!?); the way Draco was surprised that Harry's bed smelled like his own (rather than stable? Not very nice, Draco!); Harry knowing that Draco was watching; Snape's comment (my brain is having fun with that backstory). In general there was just so much more going on that Harry and Draco, yet it felt like everything was going on for them.
Any fic where they are left alive is hopeful to me, so I'd call this a happy ending.
